For as long as your meter ran backwards, nobody had to think about timing. What you generated at midday you simply took back in the evening. The hour at which you switched something on made no difference.
That is over. Today there are two prices: a low one for what you export and a high one for what you draw. The hour at which your hot-water tank or your car starts working is therefore suddenly worth money.
That is precisely what controls do: shift your usage to the right hours. Every day, without you thinking about it.
Every quarter of an hour the software sees how much your panels are generating, how much your home is using and how full the battery is. On that basis it chooses where your electricity goes.
If there is a surplus, it goes to the hot-water tank, the battery or the car instead of to the grid. If there is too little, your home lives off what it stored earlier. If output falls away, you get a signal rather than a surprise on your annual statement.

Part of your grid charge is calculated not on how much you use, but on your highest quarter-hour peak. If you cook while the tumble dryer is running and the car is charging, that single quarter of an hour sets your monthly peak — even if it happens only once. In 2026 a minimum of 2.5 kW is applied.
Controls flatten that peak by not letting everything come on at once. You therefore no longer have to plan a household around your meter. Read also the capacity tariff explained.
